4th National Ice Hockey Championship

Indian Ice Hockey Association of India held the 4th National Ice Hockey Championship (Men - Senior) at Leh from the 22nd to the 28th of January 2009. A total of 7 teams - J&K(Red), J&K(Blue), ITBP, the Indian army, Ex-servicemen's league, Kargil Ice and Snow Sports Club and Ladakh Scouts participated in this event. Shri Tsering Dorje, Chief Executive Councillor, Ladakh Hill Development Council was the chief guest for the opening ceremony.

The first day of the Championship started with a bang at the Karzoo Ice rink in Leh. Braving the cold at minus 14 degrees the local Ladakhi came out in hundreds to witness the spectacle. Akshay Kumar the Gen. Secretary of the Ice Hockey Association of India spoke about the tremendous potential of the sport of Ice Hockey in India. He also announced the opening of the first International standard Ice Hockey rink that is being constructed in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

The first match between J & K (Blue) and Indian Army saw great defence on both sides. The game was drawn at 0-0 at the end of the third period. The second match between ITBP and Ex-Servicemen's league saw ITBP dominating the game. Even though the Ex-Servicemen's League scored the first goal in the initial 3 minutes of the 1st period, ITBP rallied around and did not give them a second chance to score. The ITBP's defence and attackers both played an aggressive game and tamed the Ex-Servicemen League to win 6 goals to 1.

The last match of the day was between the Ladakh Scouts and J & K (Red) where again we saw the Indian armed forces dominating the game. The reds are the old champions from Ladakh but this time the Ladakh Scouts were well prepared and defeated them with a humiliating margin of 8 goals against 2.

The first match on the second day was played between J&K (Blue) and Ladakh Scouts. The match saw fierce competition between both team. The match ended in a draw 1- 1. The second match was between the Indian Army and J & K (red). Here too, the army dominated and the champions dropped further by losing 8 - 0 to Indian Army. The third match between Ex-Servicemen's League and Kargil Sports Club saw a closer competition with Kargil losing to the Ex-Servicemen's League 3 - 2.

The last day of the league matches before teams enter knock out stage will saw fierce battles between teams to get the last 4 spots. The first match was between the Indian Army and Ladakh Scouts. This match ended in a draw with both teams scoring 20 goals each. The second match for the day was between ITBP and Kargil Ice and Snow Sports Club with ITBP winning comfortably 13 goals to 2. The last league match was played between the two J&K teams with J&K (Blue) winning 36 to 19.

The 4 teams to make it to the semi-finals were Ex-servicemen's league, J&K(Blue), Ladakh Scouts and ITBP. In the first match the Ex-servicemen's league gave a walkover to the J&K(Blue) team. In the second semi-final between Ladakh Scouts and ITBP, Ladakh Scouts won 2-1 during penalty shootouts as the match was a draw after 5 minutes overtime.

ITBP won the Bronze medal beating the Ex-servicemen's league 5-1. The final game was an exciting match between Ladakh Scouts Regiment and J&K (Blue) that resulted in Ladakh Scouts winning 3-1 during penalty shoot outs as match was draw after 5 min overtime.
